March 30 – Istanbul to London

Sitting on the plane, waiting to leave for London and we are an hour delayed getting off the air.  And me with no way to contact Dawn and Dennis.  We make up the time  on the way to London and land 15 minutes late.  Too bad we sit on the tarmac for another 45 minutes […]

March 29 – Istanbul

Turns out Mike’s wild night out was a bust.  He said the bar was a long table with liter bottles of soda and the dancing was definitely lacking.  Glad I didn’t go with him.  Guess to really live it up here you’ve got to shell out the $.  We had breakfast together and then Mike […]

March 28 – Istanbul

We took the tram across to the new part of town where we boarded the funicular to get to the top of Istiklal Street.  I wasn’t sure what to expect although I thought it might be a lttle like The Ramblas in Barcelona.  It’s a HUGE street (both long and wide) with shops and restaurants […]

March 27 – Selçuk to Istanbul

Today we say Goodbye to Fatih as he drops us at the airport for our trip back to Istanbul.  He has a 12+ hour drive to get back to Cappadocia and a few days off before it all starts again.  He has been really wonderful to all of us, especially me considering how I decorated […]

March 26 – Selçuk and Ephesus

Another early morning, I think we were on the road at 8:30.  These middle of the night wake up calls are killing me.  On the bus and off to Ephesus.  We passed a windy road with a little building at the top which Ali told us was where Mary (as in the Virgin) lived.  Not […]

March 25 – Pamukkale to Selçuk

I am so sad that this trip is almost over.  All I want to do is go on another one and I’m already thinking about coming back to Turkey; all the things I’d like to do and all the people I hope I can get to come with me.   Woke up at 6:30, bright […]

March 24 – Fethiye to Pammukale

Checked out of AtaPark Hotel in Fethiye, where I almost got trapped in the shower door – close call – and set off to visit the ‘ghost’ town of Kaya Köyü.  This place really upset me.  Up until 1923 over 6,000 people lived here.  In 1923 they were all moved to Greece under […]

March 23 – Fethiye/Dalyan Çayi

After a 1 to 1-1/2 hour drive we arrived at Dalyan Çayi (river) for another boat cruise.   First stop – ancient mud and thermal baths.  I felt like I was back in Rotorua (New Zealand) although it’s quite a bit colder here and the scenery very different.  Smell-wise they’re interchangeable.  Lots of kitties here too […]

March 22 – Kaş to Fethiye

Bye Bye Kaş, I’m leaving you for Fethiye.  Pronunciation of words seems so easy now yet only a few weeks ago I was mispronouncing everything.  I did a Skype call with my friend, Charlie, and I think every time I said the name of a place he corrected me.  I know my feeble attempt at […]

March 21 – Kaş

Still in Kaş where, from the terrace of our hotel, you can see the Greek Island of Kastellorizo.  It appears to be close enough to swim to although it’d be a long swim (about three miles – Michael Phelps could do it in a few minutes).  If I wanted to go there I’d have to […]
